1998 Memorial

Thelma Blitz and Revolting News have generously made available Norman Savitt’s footage from the May 14 1998 memorial for Allen at The Cathedral Church of St John The Divine in New York.

Included in this video document are brief glimpses of media wizard, Danny Schechter followed by Ed Sanders (getting the congregation to “Om” for Allen!), Bob Rosenthal (introducing the late great Pedro Pietri), Steven Taylor (playing “New Stanzas for Amazing Grace” on Allen’s old harmonium), and Philip Glass with Patti Smith and her band (performing both “On Cremation of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Vidyadhara” and “Footnote to Howl”).

As an extra bonus, the tape concludes with home footage of another great, Tuli Kupferberg (annotating and reciting “Paint It Red and Black”, a “parasong”, to the tune of the Rolling Stones classic, “Paint It Black”).

Post script: that segment linked to above, is only part two as it turns out. Part one is now available here.

  1. I have a photo jpeg of the front of Saint John the Divine on the day of this memorial with a large model head of Allen Ginsberg which I would like to send you to illustrate this blog. Would you give me an e-mail address? Mine is
